Some Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS? The Knights of Columbus is a men’s Catholic Fraternal Organization founded on the ideas of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We do charitable work for the Church and Community and assist our brothers in a time of need. In addition we are also an insurance organization.

CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE INSURANCE? We do have Life insurance available to all members. Purchasing insurance in our organization is not mandatory however we do ask that when our local field agent contacts you after joining you set aside time for him to meet with you and your spouse to discuss the insurance program and you can make your decision than if you would like to get insurance through the Knights and what option would be best for you and your family.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR JOINING? To join the Knights of Columbus you must be a Male Catholic of at least 18 years of age and be of good moral character. You should have made your sacraments and make an effort to attend Mass on Sunday.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS? First you will need to contact the membership chairman and let him know you are interested in joining. He will give you an application and tell you what parts you need to fill out. Upon the completion of the application the membership chairman and his committee will interview you. Our membership committee meets for interviews every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:15 which is prior to the council meeting at 8:00 pm. You will need to be sponsored by a member so if you do not have a friend or relative in the Knights a member on the membership committee will sponsor you. After your interview your application will be read at the Council meeting for all the members to vote and approve you. Once that is done, the membership chairman will contact you for an upcoming 1st degree. When you make your 1st degree you are a member of the order. There are 4 degrees in our order and you are expected to at least make your 3rd. The 4th degree is an optional degree, and those members are called Sir Knights. Each degree teaches you about our order and prepares you to be a member.

IS IT TRUE THE KNIGHTS IS A SECRETY SOCIETY? ABSOLUTLEY NOT! The Knights is not a secret society family members and the community are very much aware of who we are and what we do. The only thing secret are the workings and ceremonies of the four degrees, and just as any organization business conducted at meetings.

Although in most councils you have to be a member to go to the lounge, in Long Beach you do not, our lounge is a separate business from the Knights of Columbus and the public is welcome. Feel free to stop by and introduce yourself meet some of our members and they will tell you what it’s all about to be a Knight. Once you hear some great stories of how we helped people, and how you can make great friends people that will always be there to help you and your family, you will be set on joining, and we’ll give you an application on the spot.
